The Former Congresswoman Creates History as First Female State Leader

Over many decades, Virginia has been led by seventy-four governors, all of them male. This week, Abigail Spanberger broke this glass ceiling by being elected as the initial woman to hold the office in Virginia's records.

Centered Around Economic Issues and Strategic Opposition

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA operative won with a election strategy that highlighted everyday expenses and strategically challenged Donald Trump's policies as opposed to the person.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a Richmond area at age 13. Her dad was an army veteran who subsequently worked in police work; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She studied at the UVA, receiving a degree in French literature. After graduating, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before embarking on a government work.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” she shared with supporters at a gathering in coastal Virginia recently.

Public Service Career

At the Postal Service, she worked cases involving drugs, exploiters and money launderers. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the sole female on the operation squad. She then entered the CIA and focused on counter-terrorism cases, working covertly and internationally.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, faced a decision. Living on the west coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They took out a world map and asked their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we decided to pivot from a national duty, to state involvement because she was right. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in Virginia, she participated in Moms Demand Action, which combats firearm incidents, and started a Girl Scout troop. In that period, she decided to run for Congress, which others told her was a “long shot” because no Democrat had secured the seventh district in 50 years.

“But I observed what Donald Trump was doing with his authority and how he was creating conflict. And I noticed my member of Congress over and over again vote to repeal the healthcare law. And I realized I had to take action. So for the record: I succeeded.”

Centrist Approach

In the capital, she rapidly became part of the moderate Democrats, a alliance of moderate and budget-conscious Democrats. She prioritized specific policies: bringing broadband to rural areas, fighting narcotics trade and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for partnering with colleagues across the aisle and was consistently rated as the most cooperative representative of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt turned off independents, warning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be weaponised in swing areas.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was dubbed a member of the “mod squad” in opposition to the progressive “group” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Run for Governor

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a another term and would rather run for governor in the next election.

Her platform highlighted themes of civic duty, advocacy for schools and public works and protection of governing systems. Her CIA background gave her authority on national security issues and she described public service as a calling instead of a career.

Successful Campaign

This enabled her to withstand rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on cultural issues, including the assertion that she is an radical on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who maintained that communities should decide whether transgender students can compete in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more misaligned with the mainstream of the commonwealth's citizens.
