The ex-lawyer for the former president has left her position as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This follows a judicial decision that questioned her legal standing to serve.

Attorney General's Statement

The nation's top law enforcement official, the Attorney General, confirmed the prosecutor's departure on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the judicial decision made it impossible for the official to lead the department effectively.

"Do not interpret compliance for surrender," she wrote. "My fight will now reach across the country."

Court Ruling

Her resignation comes a week after a US appeals court ruled that she had been acting without proper authority as US attorney. This judgment is could influence scores of legal proceedings in New Jersey.

The appellate judges ruled that a interim role that skirted the advice and consent of the Senate violated the federal law governing appointments.

Ongoing Legal Battle

The Attorney General added that Habba will remain at the Department of Justice as a high-level advisor. Habba plans to pursue additional appeals of the disqualification, with hopes of a reversal.

Writing online, Bondi wrote that the judiciary "should not be able to second-guess the appointment of lawyers entrusted with executing the primary duty of the administration of enforcing the law."

Bondi commended the prosecutor's work and pointed out that while she was in charge, the Newark saw a 20% reduction in crime. Additionally that the southern city of Camden experienced its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 with no murders.

Habba, 41, originally became part of Donald Trump's lawyers in 2021. Subsequently, she represented Trump in his hush-money trial in New York last year, leading to his conviction on multiple felony counts of document fraud.

Prior to her appointment to the role of US Attorney, Donald Trump had stated he was appointing her as his presidential counsellor in a potential future term, calling Habba as deeply loyal and a "tireless advocate for justice".
