Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be arrested and penalized "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Message That Provoked the Dispute

The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in military or security capacities.

"Similar to us, you all made an oath to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "At present, the threats to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the law or our national charter."

The Former President's Incensed Reaction

The video message reportedly prompt a heated reply from the former president.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional message, he wrote: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders Respond

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a unified statement censuring the remarks.

"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our United States with great national pride and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the security of these members and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme digital publications and recant his violent language before he gets someone killed," the declaration continued.

Lawmakers' Strong Reaction

The representatives who participated in the video also issued a declaration.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this United States and made an oath to defend and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it punishable by death for us to restate the law," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the constitution and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "The entire nation must join forces and condemn the ex-president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."

Additional Governmental Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of public representatives."

He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and unconditionally."

The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling military personnel to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The Republican leader also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and establish all that."

Administration Statement

During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the official said. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a video message to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She added: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can cause casualties, it can result in chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
