Condemnation Explodes as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Criticism

Figures from across the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

“What a vile and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

Some Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.

The Director's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of another individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
